A Tale of Joy
Millicent B James
In the spring of 2023 Amalthea Ensemble commissioned Birmingham-based composer Millicent B James to write a piece for the charity Joy of Learning, written for cello and flute duo. It premiered at Amalthea’s fundraising concert for the charity in July of the same year, and was recorded in early 2024 by Ed Day. After the tour finished, we decided to release this recording to the public. If you would like to donate to Joy of Learning, please follow the link below!

A Tale of Joy
Sun rising over the hilltops
the light welcomes the land,
greeting its people.
Today is a new day.
Little ones who can’t keep still
itching to learn something new.
For some, it’s out of reach;
their time will come.
But, for others
their time is now.
Aspirations taking seed
dreams now within reach.
Sharing dances, singing songs,
learning to count, to read, to belong.
Confidence growing, personalities bloom,
playing with friends; we’ll be back again soon.
The day is ending, time to go home.
Memories made, moments to share
it’s time to be with family
dreaming of tomorrow.
This is a tale of joy.
